The INS has released statistics demonstrating that it removed more undocumented and criminal aliens in 1995 than any previous year. More than 51,000 aliens were removed, a 75% increase since the beginning of the decade. Most of the aliens removed had committed crimes in the US. INS Commissioner Doris Meissner has stated that she expects the INS to dramatically increase the number of removals this year largely due to pending budget increases for the INS (the budget stalemate in Washington has held up passage of this year’s INS permanent funding). The funding increase will be used to support the hiring of more than 1,000 new employees who will be dealing with alien removals.
